Following these steps will ensure a successful installation of artificial turf that is both aesthetically pleasing and durable.
Measure the Area: Accurately measure the area where the artificial turf will be installed to determine the amount of turf needed.
Site Inspection: Check the site for any existing vegetation, debris, rocks, or obstacles that need to be cleared.
Remove Existing Vegetation: Clear all grass, weeds, and other plants. This can be done using a sod cutter, shovel, or by applying a weed killer.
Clear Debris: Remove any rocks, roots, or other debris from the area.
Excavation: Excavate the soil to a depth of about 3-4 inches. This depth allows for a solid base to be installed.
Add a Base Material: Spread a layer of crushed stone or decomposed granite to create a stable base. The depth of this layer should be around 2-3 inches.
Compact the Base: Use a plate compactor to compact the base material until it is firm and level.
Grade the Base: Ensure the base is graded properly for drainage. Typically, a slight slope (1-2%) away from structures is recommended.
Level the Surface: Use a level or grading tool to create an even surface. Fill in low spots and remove high spots.
Lay the Turf: Unroll the artificial turf over the prepared base. Allow it to acclimate for a few hours, especially if it's been stored in a rolled-up state.
Cut to Fit: Trim the edges of the turf to fit the area using a utility knife. Ensure the cuts are precise and clean.
Seam the Pieces: If multiple pieces are needed, join them together using seam tape and adhesive. Ensure the fibers of each piece are aligned in the same direction for a seamless look.
Secure the Edges: Use landscape spikes or turf nails to secure the edges of the turf. Space the nails about 6-8 inches apart.
Secure the Surface: Add additional nails or spikes throughout the turf, especially in high-traffic areas, to prevent movement.
Choose the Infill Material: Select an appropriate infill material, such as silica sand or rubber granules. Infill helps keep the turf blades upright and provides a cushioned feel.
Distribute the Infill: Spread the infill evenly over the turf using a drop spreader.
Brush the Turf: Use a power broom or stiff brush to work the infill into the turf and help the blades stand upright.
Inspect the Installation: Check for any areas that need additional nails, infill, or brushing.
Water the Turf (optional): Lightly water the turf to help settle the infill and remove any dust.
Regular Cleaning: Remove debris such as leaves and branches regularly.
Brush the Turf: Periodically brush the turf to keep the fibers upright and maintain its appearance.
Check for Repairs: Inspect the turf periodically for any areas that may need repair or additional infill.
